Millennium Fellowship Project: AI Governance Workshop Curriculum

The AI Governance Seminar is an interactive, educational event designed to engage students in critical discussions surrounding current and emerging frameworks for AI governance. This seminar is organized in collaboration with Georgia Tech's AI Safety Initiative and aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and inspiration to address real-world challenges in AI policy and regulation. The seminar is divided into two key parts: a workshop portion and a memo-writing competition.
The workshop serves as the foundation of the seminar, offering students a deep dive into existing AI governance frameworks and real-world policy challenges. The curriculum, developed in partnership with Georgia Tech's AI Safety Initiative, introduces participants to governance models created by leading organizations such as OpenAI and Anthropic, as well as regulatory frameworks established by governments like the European Union and China.
Key features of the workshop include: - Group discussions where students engage in facilitated discussions based on the curriculum, allowing them to explore AI governance principles, ethical considerations, and regulatory challenges. - Guest speakers from academia, industry, and policy organizations who will share insights and practical experiences in AI governance. - Exposure to real-world challenges in AI governance, such as transparency, accountability, and global cooperation. These discussions are designed to inspire and inform the memo-writing process in the next phase.
Building on the knowledge and discussions from the workshop, the second part of the seminar features a memo-writing competition. Students will form teams to develop policy memos that propose solutions to specific challenges in AI governance. This hands-on exercise encourages participants to think critically, collaborate, and apply their understanding of governance frameworks.
Highlights of the competition include: - A rubric-based evaluation, with a detailed rubric provided to guide the teams in drafting effective and persuasive memos. - Cash awards for the best memos, as determined by a panel of judges, to recognize and reward excellence in policy analysis and solution design. This two-part structure ensures that students not only learn about AI governance in theory but also develop practical skills in policy communication and advocacy. The AI Governance Seminar aims to cultivate the next generation of thinkers and leaders in the field of AI governance and safety.
