Millennium Fellowship Project: Sujalam - Suphalam Project (Good Water-Good Food)

The project aims to promote water-conservation and sustainable use of water resources through simple and easily repeatable solutions and alleviate hunger. The focus is on the rural and backward pockets of my home state, Andhra Pradesh which are mostly agrarian in nature. My project has two components to it: 1) Kitchen Gardens
This involves creating an organic backyard garden for each house where vegetables will be grown. The gardens will have a variety of plants that will provide some nutritious food, as well as increase the fertility of the soil. The water used in cooking and other house-work will be filtered and directed into the garden via strategically installed pipes. In addition, rain-water collected from the rooftops will also be strategically directed into the garden. I will install easy-to-make filtering systems with pipelines for the rain-water harvesting. This will enable the family to be independent for food and also earn money by selling the extra produce they grow.
2) Mud-based Rainwater Reservoirs
The “Rainwater Reservoirs” are an area created to collect and conserve rain-water. They will be used by the people in the drought stricken areas in times of need, particularly during the dry season when there is very little water available.
