Millennium Fellowship Project: The Red Drop Project

The Red Drop Project was a project geared at providing adequate blood supply to meet the blood needs of patients. In September, the first phase of this project was embarked upon in partnership with project Lifestream to create awareness for Sickle Cell Disease. In partnership with The Blood Drive Network (TBDN), a film documentary was premiered, detailing the lives and challenges faced by SCD survivors and their caregivers. To draw the curtain on this event, a blood drive was organised between the 27th and 29th of September, 2024 at another partner laboratory, BOLAB laboratory, Bashorun, Ibadan, for Chrisbo's sickle cell champions.
The second phase of the Red Drop project was completed on 22nd November with project Lifestream within the Ransome Kuti Hall of the University of Ibadan. This blood drive was done in conjunction with The BloodDrive Network and the National Blood Service Commission.
A total of 87 blood units were donated in both blood drives and voluntary donors were encouraged to become a part of a blood donation community to help them become regular blood donors, bridging the gap between global blood needs and global blood supply, one pint at a time.
The third phase of the project will have been completed by the end of the current session in the University of Ibadan. This is because my application not only stated that I would organise and coordinate blood drives to raise an army of blood donors, but also to carry out a qualitative investigation into the knowledge and perception held about blood donation among young people in Nigeria and the determinants that shape these. This project is my final-year project in school, in partial fulfilment of my Bachelor of Science degree in the department of Sociology, Faculty of the Social Sciences, University of Ibadan. I hope to publish it in order to add to the current discourse on blood donation, and to the end that it informs evidence-based interventions directed at rasing global blood supply.
