" I believe every person is cut out from a unique, singular social fabric- they have different upbringings, different philosophies, different perspectives and customs. The fellowship gives me a chance to interact and take bits and pieces from like minded fellows from around the world- all in the process of collectively helping communities and people "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Labs on Wheels

Labs on Wheels was initially conceived to be a project where I can make packageable, modularised biology kits and conduct hands-on experiments for kids in government schools across the city (Chennai, India). However, soon, I realised that this was a lofty logistical challenge- certain chemicals were either too costly or not conducive to travel and packaging. I had to pivot
I was already part of a team called iGEM IIT Madras that actively worked in a field called Synthetic Biology. As a part of the team's work, it had to do educational outreach to schools. I felt I can use the logistics of the team and do what I could not do alone and conduct an educational session in a small rural village community on the outskirts of the city
We conducted a fun, interactive workshop explaining the idea of a Cell, made complimentary bead bracelets to show DNA complementation and gave all the kids an activity book that subtly explains concepts of the human body through fun puzzles, mazes and coloring activities. We also played fun party games with the children and introduced them to the magical world of Bluetooth headphones!
The idea was to give young children the first real taste of science, in a village where finding teachers and textbooks is a structural problem. While the visits cannot teach them all the expansive material they need to study, it gives them hope that there is a world outside their village that they are more than capable of entering.
