Independent University Bangladesh | Dhaka, Bangladesh | Advancing SDG 8, SDG 1, SDG 2, SDG 3, SDG 17 & UNAI 6

" Growing up in Bangladesh gave me a first-hand experience of witnessing how people suffer from multidimensional crises such as poverty, natural disasters, unemployment, etc. I deeply care about the people around me and helping others gives me a sense of fulfillment. I believe that my compassionate and empathetic personality motivates me to work for those who have less. By saying, " those who have less" I am simply referring to people who are not as privileged as I am. Poor and vulnerable people who did not get a chance to educate themselves and continue to suffer from acute financial crises and insecurity. These vulnerable populations are willing to work in dangerous working conditions (as seen in ship recycling yards in Bangladesh) to make a livelihood. My project “Worker’s Safety and Health in Ship Recycling Yards of Bangladesh” aims to promote workers’ security in the workplace and help encourage safe working conditions to uphold social protection. The yards witnessed the death of one worker each week and each day one worker got injured on average. As such, I want to dedicate my academic credentials, research skills, and vast network to assist this underprivileged populace. The Millennium Fellowship would allow me to be a changemaker and torchbearer of meaningful transformation and social justice. Moreover, the Millennium Fellowship will connect me with a cohort of like-minded peers working tirelessly in pursuit of serving those around them. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Safety and Health of workers in Bangladesh's Shipyards
I have taken the initiative to work on a project involving "Worker's Safety and Health in Ship Recycling Yards in Bangladesh". These poor, vulnerable, and uneducated laborers risk their lives when they start working in the highly risk-prone ship recycling yards. I want to
dedicate my academic credentials, research skills, and vast network to assist these individuals by providing a safe working condition
for them. About 86.44% of the workers in this industry have no access to labor medical insurance and continue to work without appropriate safety measures. In this regard, I will conduct research that I hope to translate into possible policy action by raising awareness about workers' safety in Bangladesh Ship Recycling Yards. My project aims to promote the rights of workers, ensure their security in the workplace, and help encourage safe working conditions to uphold social protection. The present phenomenon demonstrates that Bangladesh is struggling to efficiently implement national and international regulatory instruments, despite having a handful of laws and regulations to protect and safeguard the interests of the workers.
