Millennium Fellowship Project: ReNew Earth
ReNew Earth is an exclusive, dedicated project which has been initiated on campus. This project focuses on achieving Sustainable development goals (SDG) 12 and 13. Goal 12 is Sustainable Consumption and Production, while goal 13 is ‘To take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts’. In order to achieve these goals, the idea is to promote environment-friendly waste management practices, primarily within the campus and later on extend it to beyond the campus premises. This is essential as waste management is a prerequisite for the healthy functioning of the environment and also us. However, the waste management practices are influenced by population growth, consumption patterns and urbanisation. The enormous waste generation, poor disposal practices and mismanagement in handling leads to serious issues like pollution, increase in landfills, resource depletion and rise in greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, in the wake of today’s society, in spite of all the existing challenges, waste disposal management has become the need of the hour. The unanimous decision to focus on waste management for our project, therefore, became inevitable. This step was completely necessary to address the environmental challenges in and around our campus. On campus, we observed the gaps in the know-how of waste segregation and disposal. This was an additional, much-required reason for us to initiate ‘ReNew Earth’. Though waste management is the primary goal, the ultimate goal is to create awareness, among the people on campus, on long-term, consistent environmental management in order to build a sustainable future for ourselves. By addressing these goals and aims and taking this initiative forward, we hope to inspire a positive change in our campus and ultimately, the community. Through these efforts, we aim to encourage lasting improvements in waste management practices and awareness about various environmentally friendly measures in the university.
