" Teamwork and interdependence motivate me to brave forth into the world and do hard things. The systems at MCN allow me to do just that. I am incredibly excited to be a part of the Millennium Fellowship community. I believe, in the words of Fred Swaniker, that tackling the worlds greatest challenges is the only way to justify priviledge. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Bridging The Divide

My project aims to improve the digital literacy of local schoolchildren by leveraging the computers available to them. The effort focuses on internet safety, presentations, digital storytelling, simple coding, and computational thinking. To encourage learning, I intend to form student groups that promote peer-to-peer education. Active participation in community digital literacy projects will be an important tool for engagement and sharing resources. Sustainability is a priority, which includes teacher training and encouraging students to take ownership of their education. Peer support and community outreach will help to maintain program sustainability. Reflecting on my own childhood, when financial constraints limited my access to technology, I am motivated to provide the opportunities I lacked. I am currently studying information technology and am inspired by people such as Bill Gates and Nelly Cheboi. The goal is to empower these children by making them knowledgeable and confident digital users. The program's goal is to improve their access to information and learning opportunities, as well as to instill confidence in using technology for communication, collaboration, and problem solving. Evaluation will include tracking student and teacher engagement with digital materials and collecting feedback for ongoing curricular revision.

About the Millennium Fellow

Andrew Sollitei is a student in Kenya with a desire to learn new things. He was born in Kenya, where he currenty resides. Studying at the Jomo Kenyatta Institute of Agriculture and Technology, he aspires to be a software engineer, and a good one at that. He's also an advocate for the empowrment that comes with education and knowledge. He envisions a world where people have access to the information required to overcome their challenges and effect positive changes in their lives. This has led him to visit a number of local high schools to help these developing students acquire insight they'll use to make informed decisions in their life. Best of all, Andrew really values teamwork and interdependence.
