Millennium Fellowship Project: Justice for All: Legal Literacy for SDG 16+
Project Title: Justice for All: Legal Literacy for SDG 16+
Location: Madhesh Pradesh, Nepal
Implementation Period: September 2024
Background and Objectives
"Justice for All: Legal Literacy for SDG 16+" was developed as a youth-focused initiative to promote legal awareness among students in grades 8–12. The project aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 16+, emphasizing peace, justice, and strong institutions. The primary objectives were:
1. To educate students about their fundamental rights and duties under the constitution of Nepal.
2. To enhance understanding of legal rights during trials for both victims and accused individuals.
3. To introduce students to the principles of juvenile justice and the legal protections available to young people.
Target Audience and Scope
The program targeted students in grades 8–12 from three schools in Madhesh Pradesh, Nepal:
1. Einstein Higher Secondary School, Janakpur
2. Public Youth, Janakpur 3. Gyankup School, Janakpur
Over 300 students participated in the program, representing a diverse cross-section of the local youth population. The program prioritized inclusivity, ensuring that students from marginalized backgrounds were actively involved.
Key Activities
The project included the following core activities:
Interactive Workshops: Facilitated engaging sessions to educate students on fundamental rights, trial rights, and the principles of juvenile justice using real-life scenarios and relatable examples.
Educational Materials: Distributed student-friendly pamphlets and booklets in Nepali and Maithili, providing simplified explanations of key legal concepts.
Roleplay and Simulations: Conducted mock trial sessions where students acted as victims, accused, and legal representatives, helping them understand judicial processes.
Training Peer Educators: Identified and trained motivated students from each school to serve as peer educators, enabling the ongoing dissemination of legal knowledge within their schools.
Collaboration and Partnerships
The program was implemented in collaboration with local legal experts, volunteer law students from Kathmandu University, and school administration committees. Their contributions ensured the program's relevance, engagement, and success in addressing the specific needs of the community.
About the Millennium Fellow
Ashmit Kumar Jha Aayush is a dynamic law student at Kathmandu University School of Law, pursuing a dual degree in Business Management and Law (BBM-LL.B). With a strong passion for legal research, youth empowerment, and social justice, he has co-founded and led several impactful organizations, including the PDS-Nepal Student Network and Legal Research Society Nepal (LRS-Nepal). Ashmit’s leadership extends to his role as Chief Operating Officer at Creating Opportunity International Pvt Ltd, where he drives strategic initiatives to empower young entrepreneurs across South Asia. His commitment to positive change is further reflected in his active involvement in diverse community and academic projects.
