Millennium Fellowship Project: Quantification Of Phytochemicals In Chayote Fruit
My project is about Quantification of total phenols, tannins and flavonoids from different Chayote fruit cultivars grown in different regions of Uganda. Chayote is a plant that has been traditionally used in Uganda for medicinal purposes, and there is growing interest in its potential health benefits. Chayote fruit, also known as vegetable pear, mirliton, is a vegetable that is widely grown and consumed in many parts of the world. I moved around the different markets of Uganda around Kampala asking market vendors about the purchase of the fruit and most of them told me that they get few customers on a daily basis which clearly indicates that few people are unaware about its nutritional and health benefits hence underutilized and undervalued in many parts of Uganda. . In Uganda, little is known about the amount of phenols, tannins and flavonoids in chayote fruit. This presents a challenge for public health efforts to improve health and combat chronic diseases, particularly in regions where access to nutritious foods like chayote is limited. To address this challenge, there is need for further research and investment in promoting the use of chayote fruit as a viable and sustainable source of health benefits in Uganda.
