" I’m excited to be a Millennium Fellow because I’ve always believed in the power of community-driven change. Growing up across different countries, I saw firsthand how much impact one can have when believing in a cause. I do this work because I want to be that person for others, the one who believes in their dreams and helps turn them into reality. Being part of the Millennium Fellowship means I get to connect with others who share this passion and work together to create lasting, positive change "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Bottles to Shelter

Our project bridges environmental efforts on campus with humanitarian needs by collecting discarded plastic bottles from Meiji Gakuin University and transforming them into durable plastic sheets for shelters in the Kutupalong Refugee Camp. With over 400 bottles discarded daily on the Yokohama campus alone and only 22% recycled, we’ve raised awareness of plastic waste's environmental impact and its potential for meaningful reuse. Despite challenges with Japan’s strict recycling laws, we collaborated with initiatives like Food Bank and Green Cycle to integrate sustainability into campus activities and events, such as the "Celebrating Diversity on Campus" festival. While not all goals were realized during this term, we’ve laid a strong foundation—detailed plans, resources, and partnerships—for future fellows to scale this project and continue creating impactful change, uniting environmental action with global humanitarian efforts.

About the Millennium Fellow

Nujood Aldoseri is an International Relations major at Meiji Gakuin University in Japan. Having grown up in Belgium, Germany, Bahrain, and Japan, she has developed a deep passion for traveling, learning about diverse cultures, and interacting with people worldwide to gain a global perspective. From recycling initiatives in elementary school to building houses for the underprivileged in middle school, she has always been committed to sustainability. Currently, she is researching how legal frameworks can be improved to promote sustainability, particularly focusing on the coexistence of Sharia law and CEDAW in Bahrain. She is also working on a project with fellows to address plastic and electronic waste in Japan by repurposing them into shelters.
