" "I am excited to be a Millennium Fellow because it offers me the unique opportunity to collaborate with like-minded individuals, deepen my understanding of social justice, and actively contribute to global efforts toward achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. This fellowship will allow me to amplify my impact and create lasting positive change in my community and beyond." "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Empower Me

The EMPOWER ME project is a collaborative initiative led by Millennium Fellows Elizabeth Maina, Vincent Kinuthia, and Peter Mwangi at Mount Kenya University. It addresses the critical issue of Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV) and its broader implications for mental health, equality and community well-being. TFGBV including cyberstalking, online harassment and image-based abuse is a global challenge impacting nearly 40% of women and causing significant psychological harm such as anxiety, depression and trauma (UN Women; UNFPA)【12】【13】.
The project adopts a holistic approach by raising awareness, advocating for gender equality and promoting mental wellness within and beyond the university. EMPOWER ME aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3 (Good Health and Well-being), 5 (Gender Equality), and 10 (Reduced Inequality), reflecting its commitment to fostering inclusivity and safety in digital and physical spaces (UNESCO; UNFPA)【11】【13】.
Through workshops, campaigns and collaborations the initiative emphasizes the importance of addressing harmful social norms, empowering individuals and creating safer environments for everyone. By focusing on community engagement and advocacy EMPOWER ME contributes to building a society that values mental health and gender equality without leaving anyone behind.
