Millennium Fellowship Project: Empower Me

The EMPOWER ME project is a collaborative initiative led by Millennium Fellows Elizabeth Maina, Vincent Kinuthia, and Peter Mwangi at Mount Kenya University. It addresses the critical issue of Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV) and its broader implications for mental health, equality and community well-being. TFGBV including cyberstalking, online harassment and image-based abuse is a global challenge impacting nearly 40% of women and causing significant psychological harm such as anxiety, depression and trauma (UN Women; UNFPA)【12】【13】.
The project adopts a holistic approach by raising awareness, advocating for gender equality and promoting mental wellness within and beyond the university. EMPOWER ME aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3 (Good Health and Well-being), 5 (Gender Equality), and 10 (Reduced Inequality), reflecting its commitment to fostering inclusivity and safety in digital and physical spaces (UNESCO; UNFPA)【11】【13】.
Through workshops, campaigns and collaborations the initiative emphasizes the importance of addressing harmful social norms, empowering individuals and creating safer environments for everyone. By focusing on community engagement and advocacy EMPOWER ME contributes to building a society that values mental health and gender equality without leaving anyone behind.
