" Being a designer, I have been trained to approach problems from creative and logical perspectives. I would be thrilled to utilise this form of thinking to create study content that caters to various learning styles, and solve the increasing plight of many adolescents when it comes to studying. I believe creating better learning content in my region would positively change the perception of education, which is currently associated with reluctance and burnout. It is necessary to redesign the system into the enjoyable journey it was always meant to be - ensuring it's accessible to all, which in turn would build framework for true, quality education. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Learning Redesigned
Recalling our schooldays usually evokes a hint of nostalgia. But in all probability, not towards the actual ‘studying' part. Stress, confusion, last-minute cramming during exams. Big decisions, stream choices, pressures. Figuring out your interests, your academic position in this world. One of the most formative times of your life. During this phase, there is much emphasis on ‘learning’ ie. commonly defined
as plowing through paragraphs of text. Being able to ‘read' well equates to intellect.
Who decided so?
Doubts are natural. Taking time to comprehend is natural. Not using just one learning mechanism is natural. But our resources and pedagogy often don’t get it.
The problem: In India, many students struggle to enjoy/keep up with their subjects due to restrictive study resources.
Contributing factors:
Non-standardised teaching modes across the country
Rigid examination methods
Resources catering only to textual learners
This is the change I bring in. Textbooks are the one, standardised resource available cost-effectively to most of the student population in India.
If school or classroom learning was not an option, the Board textbook is the only guide.
Hence, this project aims to redesign the NCERT textbook into visual guidebooks that cater to ALL types of learners, potentially increasing their chances at choosing a field they enjoy and excel at, which will benefit their careers and the nation's economy.
