" "As a dream come true, I am excited to be a Millennium Fellow because it offers a platform to amplify my efforts in addressing global food insecurity and contributing to achieving goal 2 (Zero hunger) of the UN SDGs. I believe that empowering young people through sustainable agriculture is key to creating lasting change, and this fellowship will help me connect with like-minded individuals to make a greater impact." "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Youth in Agribusiness
As part of the Millennium Fellowship program, I undertook the Youth in Agribusiness project, which was to address two of the most critical challenges facing Sierra Leone: unemployment and food insecurity. The project aligned with Goal 2 of the SDGs, "Zero Hunger," and aimed at the promotion of sustainable agriculture, enhancement of food security, and employment opportunities for the youth. More than 100 youths benefited from agripreneurship training through on-site and in-class sessions, thus equipping them to contribute to the agricultural value chain for sustainable livelihoods.
Project Goals and Objectives
The general goal of the project was to contribute to increased food security in Sierra Leone and achieve zero hunger, at the same time, address the problem of unemployed youth. The specific objectives were:
1. To Provide Agripreneurship Skills among Youths: Impart a mix of agricultural knowledge with business skills, making participants potential agripreneurs.
2. To Lower the Rate of Unemployment: Inculcate the spirit of self-employment among the young in farming, processing, and agribusiness.
3. To Enhance Food Security: Result in higher agricultural productivity and innovative ideas by the active involvement of trained youths, contributing to Sierra Leone's quest to attain SDG 2.
