" I’m eager to join the Millennium Fellowship to refine my skills for creating both local and global impact. I look forward to meeting and working with like-minded people as we strengthen our skills together. Moreover, I'm excited to do meaningful projects that contribute to a more equitable and sustainable future on my university campus and beyond. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Beyond The Violet Pantry
Due to the need to access fresh produce and nonperishables, New York University's Liberal Studies School was the first Pantry to open its 'Violet Pantry' doors and have goods available for students to take. After four years of being open, the Pantry has acquired funding from NYU and donor donations. However, the need for more food security options continues. While the Violet Pantry has been open, other NYU Schools have also opened their doors, such as the School of Silver and Social Work's Silver Shelf, the USG Pantry from NYU Steinhardt, and the SCA Pantry within the Department of Sociocultural Analysis under NYU's College of Arts and Sciences. While these pantries have just begun, and students find their pantries helpful, the questions about food insecurity, how to fund them, and the level of need remain. Therefore, I, as a Liberal Studies Service Ambassador working at the Violet Pantry at the time, wondered what would happen if all of our pantries began talking to one another. We could review successes and struggles and work together on various projects to make food insecurity resources available to all students university-wide, such as the All-NYU-Food Pantry Committee.
About the Millennium Fellow
Saylee Nemade is an undergraduate at New York University Steinhardt and a first-generation Indian American immigrant. She began addressing food insecurity during her first year at NYU DC, where she observed severe grocery shortages in low-income communities. She deepened her commitment through coursework and volunteering at markets and pantries. As an NYU Liberal Studies Service Ambassador, Saylee works to alleviate food insecurity among college students through food justice initiatives. As she is pursuing her double major in public health and applied psychology, she aspires to address systemic food insecurity and mental health issues advocating for marginalized communities.
