" Regardless of upbringing, it is important to recognize the challenges faced by others in your local community, or even different parts of the world, rather than separate yourself from them. The Millennium Fellowship will not only further fuel my passion for social impact but also help me turn my words into action through its distinct project process. For example, by making me focus on a Sustainable Development Goal, so that I can more effectively execute my project with greater impact. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: The Climate Chronicles

The Climate Chronicles will be an interactive exhibit where college students move through activities that deepen their knowledge of the climate crisis and research. They will also be exposed to the research of the Byrd Polar Climate Research Center – a world renowned research center on campus, which houses rare tropical ice cores that date the climate record. There will be guided exhibits, with activities like “Ice Core Science,” where students can analyze physical ice cores and create a climate timeline under the guidance of an instructor, or “Survival,” where students will take part in building effective glacial research teams, while being exposed to polar research equipment. There will also be solo exhibits where students can do projects to take home with them. For example, students can play “The Carbon Cycle Game,” where the end product is a bracelet that represents a carbon atoms journey, or learn to make an origami cherry blossom as they discover how the Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival has been used to measure climate change. The goal is to connect students with the climate crisis and research through climate education while increasing awareness of the Byrd Polar Climate Research Center, which most students unfortunately don’t know about.
