Millennium Fellowship Project: Smog and Life Amidst Pollution in Lahore

Lahore is the second largest city of Pakistan, with a 3.06% growth rate [1]. However, according to the United States Air Quality Index (US AQI), it is the third most polluted city in the world, and second in South Asia, only after Delhi [2]. The prominent cause of this air pollution is smog, an “unhealthy air pollution mixed with smoke and fog”. This worsens PM2.5 exposure, and thereby related deaths across all kinds of age groups and sex, surging from 82,300 in 1990 to 1,35,100 in 2015. [3]. This project aims to investigate the social, environmental, and health related impacts of smog in Lahore. Aims It aims to:
1. Critically valuate seasonal changes in primary pollutants.
2. To study the impacts of smog on the larger environment.
3. To determine the issues related to human health Effect of Smog The major cause of the smog is anthropogenic including burning of farmland to increase productivity and wide-spread use of brick kiln factories in the Punjab region. As smog intensifies many problems, it impacts on human health causing nausea, asthma, allergies, and other respiratory and cardio-vascular related issues. It also impacts the functioning of the nervous system, urinary system, digestive system, and generates harmful impacts pregnant women by worsening difficulty in breathing or skin irritation. Smog also affects agricultural land and harms plants [5
