Millennium Fellowship Project: Mind Matters; Empowering Mental Health Advocacy

Mental health, particularly in the Kenyan context tends to be a very sensitive subject. Our country has not particularly gotten to the point where they view mental health challenges as a serious issue. This initiative seeks to shed light on the taboo surrounding mental health challenges. There seems to be an attitude of stigmatizing people who choose to actively talk about the challenges they face in terms of their mental health. The initiative seeks to focus primarily on the the most receptive demographic with the highest number of individuals facing mental health issues, Kenyan Youth. We tend to be forced to hide in the shadows as mental health survivors because of cultural norms. By creating a platform that allows us to share experiences, access psychosocial support and discover valuable resources, we hope to address the unique barriers we face in addressing our mental well-being. Through de-stigmatizing and advocating for mental health awareness in Kenya, we hope to empower young Kenyans to seek help and prioritize their mental wellness. We also seek to use survivors like myself to not be ashamed of the struggles we have had to endure but to use them as a rallying call for others fighting in silence.
