" Hailing from a marginalized community, I have firsthand experience with the challenges faced by those living in poverty. These experiences have ignited a passion within me to create positive change. I believe that education is a powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty and empowering marginalized communities. By participating in the Millennium Fellowship, I aim to connect with like-minded individuals and experts to develop effective strategies for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals and uplifting the status of marginalized people. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Project Kargar: Empowering Contract Labours
My project revolves around legal empowerment, it aims to create a decent workplace, dignified life, and economic growth for contract laborers. In India, laborers are one of the most unorganized and suppressed communities, they get not only meager pay but are also subject to dehumanization. They lack basic amenities like toilets, first aid, hygienic food, etc. They can not afford lawyers to fight the atrocities of the contractors as they lack legal awareness. The law of the land guarantees them multiple rights. However, there is a huge gap between the law in the land and the book. If these law book principles are implemented well on the ground the conditions of the labourers will change for good. My mission is to narrow this gap as much as I can. In aspiration to achieve this I am conducting regular meetings with contract laborers in and around my university campus, and construction sites, and understanding the situation. I have prepared a legal literature booklet addressing the challenges, I am distributing it to them. Sometimes, this is risky for me as contractors and principal employers consider this an uprising against them. I am optimistic I will get the contract laborers a dignified life.
