" As the badminton assistant and the president of MUN club, I learned how to be in other's shoes and try my best to benefits others. Now, as a student majoring in Neural Science, I would like to apply such experience to my future exploration, including Millennium Fellow activities. I would like to use my major knowledge to arise people's attention about some diseases like dyslexia. Transforming what I learned into what the society need is my ideal wish. Millennium Fellow is just a very good chance for me to realize this wish. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Where are the Characters?
My initiative starts with dyslexia. China has been researching dyslexia for less than 30 years. Many people around me are not familiar with this concept, and some of them might also have problems with reading and writing. When reaching out to my college’s academic accommodations center, I found that there were other things besides dyslexia, which all belonged to “learning disability”. Many students, including me, did not know this. Therefore, I want to increase the NYU Shanghai community’s awareness of learning disabilities, letting more faculties know the existence of such challenges and help students better accommodate to their school life. The social impact strategies I mainly used included interviewing experts in the learning disability field, listening to the voices of faculties and students who have learning disability, doing exhibitions to popularize knowledge in my community, introducing the experts to related school departments and holding events together.
I have the following objectives:
Bridge the gap between students’ voices and the reactions of our school’s related department, therefore improving the academic accommodations service
Popularize the knowledge of “learning disability” in NYU Shanghai community in order to increase people’s awareness of such cases and help some of them to better understand themselves
Long-term vision: Students with learning disability can be treated equally and have tailored accommodations when they are studying at our school; Every community member can respect these students and understand their difficulties. Meanwhile, I wish I can do some academic research in the field of dyslexia, therefore helping dyslexia study develop in China
