Millennium Fellowship Project: Zivoya
The problem we aim to solve is the discomfort experienced by women and children while using public transport, by providing them with a travel solution that relieves them of their safety concerns. With recent sexual harassment instances in auto-rickshaws in the vicinity of Viman Nagar, and area predominantly inhabited by Symbiosis students, targeting young college girls travelling alone, it increases the fear and anxiety amongst female students and young working professionals. It makes them scared to go out alone, especially after dawn. Auto driving and cabs are a male dominated sector, making public transportation a source of unease for them rather than a convenience. This makes women-driven public transportation a need of the hour, but unfortunately there are none available in Pune, as of now. Through discussions with our female peers, we found that they all wished they had the option of a female driver, to have a comfortable travel experience where they can enjoy the journey instead of worrying for their safety and wellbeing. Even some working parents, from all over the country, face the issue of having to drop and pick their own children from schools, as they do not feel comfortable sending their young kids with van drivers.
Our app ‘Zivoya’ aims to connect female travelers and young children, irrespective of whether they are commuting for work, education or for leisure purposes, with female auto-rickshaw drivers. This will help provide a viable and stress-free travel experience at an affordable price. To tackle the issue of harassment, we plan to implement proper security measures like real-time face verification, user registration, simple booking mechanism, secure payment options, and continuous driver training programmes. We are highly committed to improving the travel experience and bringing peace of mind to our target audience.
