" I am truly excited and grateful to be selected as a Millennium Fellow. It is a wonderful opportunity for me and many youths to bring about positive change in our community. I await to interact with a diverse set of people around the globe, understand their culture, perspectives, and the environment they grew up in. I also gain various insights on improving both my project and my leadership skills through this program. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: EcoSort
This project was focused on establishing a Decentralized Waste Management System at our Campus to promote sustainability and reduce the environmental impact. The campaign was designed to encourage waste segregation, adopt eco-friendly practices, and build awareness among students and staff about responsible waste disposal.
Key activities involved in this project were:
1. Implementation of a three-bin system for segregating wet, plastic, and paper waste that made recycling and composting more efficient.
2. Collaborate with a student-led startup that is introducing biodegradable sanitary napkins, supported by installing vending machines in girls' washrooms.
3. Launching campaigns of awareness through posters at strategic places on campus to make the students aware and inspired towards behavioral change towards sustainability.
It directly addressed key issues such as inappropriate waste disposal, the environmental burden of non-biodegradable waste, and unawareness about sustainable practices. Thus, through the improvement in infrastructure, engagement of the stakeholders, and creating an awareness building campaign, this project has depicted a complete process for creating a campus with a sustainable environment.
