Millennium Fellowship Project: AltIntervention

Literacy is foundational to academic success, yet only 35% of APS students are proficient in reading. This issue is particularly acute in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods, where schools lack the resources to provide high-quality, science-based literacy instruction. Early interventions, such as universal pre-kindergarten programs, are critical to closing these gaps. However, APS currently operates on a lottery-based system that leaves many students without access to these foundational programs.
Addressing literacy challenges requires a comprehensive approach that includes wraparound services. These services encompass affordable housing, childcare, mental health support, after-school programs, and mentorship opportunities. By addressing the root causes of inequity, these interventions can help students focus on their education and develop the self-efficacy needed to succeed. Community collaboration is essential to this effort. APS must work closely with city councils, nonprofits, and other stakeholders to coordinate resources and provide holistic support for students and families
