" “In a chaotic world, where the girl child is constantly told what she cannot be, Girls Work it Together aims to be a haven that nurtures her potential and supports her biggest dreams. Fueled with a drive and passion for change one person at a time, the Millennium Fellowship provides a space for me to grow as a leader and an advocate contributing to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals." Millennium Fellowship Project: Girls Work It Together x Women in Tech
Work It Together (WIT) is a faith-based organization founded to address prevalent gender inequality and social issues in Nigeria and across Africa. An average African girl is restricted by societal disparities, limiting her intellectual curiosities and promoting constant exposure to physical and mental abuse.
According to UNICEF, 7.6 million Nigerian girls lack access to quality education, contributing to the fact that over 56% of out-of-school children in sub-Saharan Africa are girls. In Northern Nigeria, girl child marriage remains prevalent, with around 30.3% of girls under 18 getting married. Aligned with UN SDG 5 - Gender Equality and UN AI 3 - Education for All, WIT is a collaborative project to impact over a hundred girls by the end of 2024 and ensure they can live their biggest dreams through these missions.
The GWIT X WIT is one of our projects to enhance digital literacy and raise awareness about computer science and programming among young females in Nigeria. Through our efforts, we seek to explore STEM interests in young women and promote inclusion and diversity. The project will last eight weeks, during which we will collaborate with selected guest speakers, create mentorship opportunities with Computer- Science Spelman students, integrate social justice development pitches and hold weekly check-ins to amplify our impact on the participants.
About the Millennium Fellow
Eniola Omogbai is an inquisitive and compassionate international pre-medicine student at Spelman College. From a young age, Eniola questioned the societal roles imposed on girls in Nigeria, where challenges like teen pregnancy, child marriage, female genital mutilation, gender disparity in education, and sexual abuse are prevalent. She is also profoundly concerned about the lack of mental health support for those affected by these issues. Through her passion for social justice, female education, and mental health, Eniola founded the Girls Work It Together Organization, dedicated to ensuring the holistic growth of teenage and young adult females.
