" Driven by my experiences growing up in a rural village in South Nyanza, Kenya, I have always been passionate about girl-child education. As a Millennium Fellow, I am excited to enhance my ability to provide quality education and mentorship to underprivileged children, empowering them to reach their full potential and transform their communities "
Millennium Fellowship Project: The Ligodho Water Project
The Ligodho Water Project is a community-driven initiative focused on addressing water scarcity in rural Kenya. This project rehabilitated an aging borehole and desilted a backup dam to ensure consistent access to clean water for nearly 1,000 residents and the Mboga Vocational Training Centre. By reducing waterborne diseases and mitigating human-animal conflicts, the project highlights the critical need for sustainable water management in under-resourced areas. It stands as a model of resilience and collaboration, combining local resourcefulness with external partnerships to create a sustainable solution.
About the Millennium Fellow
Lydia Ouma is a brilliant, young, and globally competitive Tourism student at Strathmore University. She was born in a rural village in South Nyanza, Kenya, and currently resides in Nairobi. Lydia has always been passionate about girl-child education, a passion deeply rooted in her experiences of witnessing many children, especially girls, missing school due to household responsibilities. This drive translated into her launching the “Education for Children in Urban Slums” project, aiming to provide quality education and mentorship to underprivileged children. Lydia aspires to empower these children to reach their full potential and transform their communities
