" The intersectional nature of sustainability and social justice have piqued my interest since I was young really. This opportunity provided by the Millennium Fellowship program will allow me to not only connect with scholars in Vancouver and Canada, but across the globe! I hope that with honesty and passion for our work we can work to make our communities stronger! "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Reducing Harm in Healthcare & SDG 3
This project is a component of the J Healthcare Initiative at the University of British Columbia. At the JHI, we aim to address healthcare barriers that the unhoused and people who use drugs face in Vancouver. In light of the ongoing drug poisoning epidemic, we saw a gap that existed & while we aim to advocate for all individuals who use drugs in their pursuit of healthcare, those who are unhoused in Vancouver face significant challenges in receiving adequate ad equal access to healthcare. We aim to reduce these barriers & challenges via a multiple-tiered approach. We initiated our approach with our first tier which involves educating and raising awareness on campus to the issues that face our community. Our next tier involved raising funds for events & initiatives we are planning to do in the new year so that we may continue our work, which is funded publicly and through fundraising. Our last tier involves executing these events which focus on education & advocacy (such as panel events, and trivia nights), and direct involvement (such as our wound care initiative on the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver).
About the Millennium Fellow
Madina Phelan (AKA Wren) has always had a passion for social justice, and the intersectional nature of social justice with many fields of study. Being a third culture kid, Wren has had so many opportunities to interact with people from across the globe from their work in harm reduction to their daily interactions. Wren is in their last year at the University of British Columbia studying Political Science and Sociology, and hopes to go into Medical School after graduation to further explore the intersection of social justice with the world at large.
