" My work is deeply motivated by the health challenges I've faced due to improper waste disposal, as well as those experienced by my loved ones. Being a part of the Millennium Fellowship would not only equip me with the skills to effectively manage, lead, and drive the change I aspire to, but it would also serve as a continual source of inspiration and motivation. Knowing that I am contributing to a larger movement with shared goals would reinforce my commitment to making a meaningful impact. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: WasteWise

WasteWise is an initiative aimed at addressing the growing issue of electronic waste (e-waste) by promoting proper recycling and safe disposal practices. The project focuses on raising awareness about the environmental impact of e-waste, organising collection drives, and collaborating with certified recycling facilities to ensure the ethical and sustainable handling of discarded electronics.

About the Millennium Fellow

Samika Dewan is a driven and ambitious sophomore at the University of British Columbia, where she is pursuing a combined major in Statistics and Economics. Known for her outspoken nature, Samika’s commitment to environmental advocacy was sparked by her observation of the increased use of gadgets and the insufficient e-waste disposal practices, which posed significant health hazards, especially in urban areas like Delhi. Her passion and leadership during high school led her to establish WasteWise, a student-led organization focused on raising awareness about proper waste disposal and implementing practical solutions. Now, as she embarks on her university journey, Samika is eager to extend her efforts, focusing on broader environmental issues while continuing her cause of sustainable e-waste disposal. She aspires to create a healthier environment for future generations, drawing from her own life experiences make meaningful changes, that truly have a global impact.
