" " I am very honored and grateful to be part of the Millennium Fellowship Class of 2024. This fellowship will equip me with the tools needed to address educational disparities related to high school achievement gaps and college access. As a first-generation college student, I aspire to address global sustainability challenges related to quality education with humility, inclusive leadership, and a collaborative mindset. I am eager to learn from other fellows and distinguished colleagues from around the globe. I am also committed to advancing the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals and the United Nations’ Academic Impact Principles.” "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Extra Learning Youth Scholars Program

My project focuses on supporting high school students with SAT and ACT preparation, as well as the college application process. I also provide guidance on writing personal statements for college applications and crafting effective cover letters

About the Millennium Fellow

Jonathan Jean Charles is a third-year student at the University of Miami (UM) double majoring in Biochemistry and Global Health. Hailing from Miami, FL, Jonathan is passionate about educational equity, health equity, and mental health advocacy. Jonathan takes great pride in his Haitian roots and believes in education as a tool to mobilize communities for social change. Throughout high school and college, Jonathan aided inner-city high school students and former foster care adolescents with SAT prep, classwork, and the college application process. At UM, Jonathan serves as a Counseling Outreach Peer Educator where he collaborates with other peer educators to raise awareness of mental health concerns. He is also a President’s 100 Student Ambassador and Student Experience Coordinator for the Butler Center for Service and Leadership. When Jonathan is not engaged in community work, he enjoys playing basketball, writing poetry, and lifting weights. After he graduates from UM, Jonathan plans to pursue a medical degree and engage in public health advocacy. His determination to become a culturally competent physician motivates him to advance Sustainable Development Goal # 4 while being a role model for other first-generation college students and children of immigrant families worldwide.
