Millennium Fellowship Project: Save The Planet: Keeping The Environment Clean

Project Save the Planet, Keeping the environment clean took place on the 13h of November, 2024 at the University of Benin Demonstration Secondary School(UDSS). I spoke to about 300 students on the relevance and benefits of having a clean eco-friendly environment. I started off by explaining the term SDG, and it’s purpose in our world today. I made emphasis on SDG 3 Good Health and Well-Being and SDG 6 Clean Water and Sanitation. It was an interactive session where the students and I shared ideas and information on what we understood by a sustainable environment. In the insightful session, it came to my knowledge that most students were only aware of their contribution to land pollution. I further explained Pollution as the presence or introduction of harmful substances, contaminants, or energies into the environment, which can cause adverse effects on humans, animals, plants, and ecosystems.I also spoke about the different types of Pollution( Air pollution, Water pollution, Land Pollution and Noise pollution). I explained our roles as individuals and how as good moral citizens of the country, we can improve environmental sanitation and preserve our lives. Other topics I discussed were Biodiversity, Environment and Health, Waste and material resources, Energy and a little on Climate change. I shared physical handouts round the students to buttress my points. The students were engaged and asked important questions after the session, ‘It was very enlightening and engaging’ said a Grade 12 student after the session. And what I got from this was that most of these students were unaware of the meaning of the SDGs, some only knew improper disposal of refuses as the only pollution created by mankind. I got a positive feedback from the class headmasters who attended the session and was advised to use more of visual projections in the future. In conclusion, it was an impactful project. A project to go far and wide. Each day we learn and grow as individuals but this project is one that can make us grow as a better society. To me, this was not just a project but fulfilling a purposeful need and saving lives. I would also like to appreciate the Prinicipal of that school for the given opportunity to speak and make a positive impact. A project that would not be short-lived but remain for centuries to come.#SavethePlanetandKeeptheenvironmentclean
