Millennium Fellowship Project: Defect-Free Generations Advocacy

My project is aimed at reducing the occurrence of birth defects in my immediate community (Ilorin). Birth defects are caused by the exposure of a growing fetus to teratogens during pregnancy. In Nigeria, unwanted pregnancies are quite common as many women are ignorant on how to monitor their monthly cycles and how to prevent pregnancies effectively. Probability of having a birth defect is greatly increased in unwanted pregnancies because these teratogens, which are normally meant to be avoided during pregnancies will still be consumed as the woman doesn't know she is pregnant yet. And the first trimester is a very sensitive period where organs and limbs of the fetus are formed. Exposure of the fetus to teratogens during this period leads to severe birth defects.
This project aims to reduce the occurrence of birth defects by enlightening women of reproductive age on:
1. Common birth defects and their causative factors
2. Common teratogens and the stage they should be avoided during pregnancy
3. Effective methods of preventing pregnancies 4. How to calculate your monthly cycle
5. Treatment of birth defects 6. Prenatal care, post natal care and immunization.
This will be carried out by community outreaches to women of reproductive age in markets, churches, and schools.
