" In contrast to the majority of students who pursue education exclusively with the aspiration of "making it in life," I harbor a guileless desire for my degree to serve as a means of self-expression, giving back to my community and a platform to bring the St. Luke's Foundation, a charitable organisation which I have passionately envisioned into fruition. My ultimate goal is to exploit the privileges afforded to me by my education to make a tangible impact on the lives of others, especially underprivileged children in my community. This opportunity will not provide me the opportunity to connect with mentors, peers, and professionals who share similar goals and values. Ultimately, I see this scholarship as an investment in not just my education, but also in my potential to contribute positively to my community and society at large. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Teach A Child Programme
Teach a Child Programme Report
The Teach a Child Programme was a community-based initiative aimed at providing basic education to children in my community. As the project coordinator, I am pleased to submit this report, highlighting the project's objectives, methodology, outcomes, and lessons learned.
The primary objective of the Teach a Child Programme was to provide educational support to children in my community, with a focus on promoting literacy and numeracy skills. To achieve this objective, volunteers were recruited from different campuses across Nigeria and assigned to specific communities around them, where they worked with children to provide educational support. Volunteers submitted regular reports on their activities, which were monitored and evaluated by the project coordinator.
The project was implemented over a period of four months, with the final project evaluation taking place at Okeose Community Primary School. During this visit, I had the opportunity to go with my fellow, Emmanuel Anchor who talked to the pupils about having the Victor’s mentality as I also summarized my project with them.
Challenges: language barrier and immaturity on the part of the pupils
Number of pupils reached: 90
Throughout the project, several lessons were learned. One key takeaway was the importance of community engagement and participation in educational initiatives. Additionally, the project highlighted the need for sustained support and resources to ensure the long-term impact of educational projects. In conclusion, the Teach a Child Programme was a successful initiative that demonstrated the power of community-based education projects. I am grateful to the volunteers, schools, and communities that participated in the project. I hope that this report will serve as a useful resource for future educational initiatives.
About the Millennium Fellow
Onogwu Luke Ochohepo is a positive change agent and a Physiology student at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria. He is a young man who desires to be a paediatrician just like Dr Ben Carson. Moved by his passion, he started volunteering as a Mathematics teacher five year ago and he received an award for his service to the community in 2020. He later established the Pacesetter’s club to support students facing academic challenges and mentored some students successfully. He educates students in my community about the world beyond it, run a scholarship forum (The Ignite Forum), and founded a group for community medical outreaches. He has envisioned the establishment of the 'St. Luke's Foundation,' a charitable organization that will focus on children's health care and provide educational sponsorships for underprivileged children. He hopes to take care of children who are facing financial challenges in their academics, and those who lack proper medical attention.
