" The skills I gain from the Millennium Fellowship will help me impact a large margin of my community and bring fulfillment, knowing I was part of a fellowship that empowered me to contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. I'm excited to come up with great ideas that align with UNAI principles for the greater good of others. As a creative and innovative individual, I know how to work with whatever is around me, and applying these skills as a Millennium Fellow will help sharpen my communication and improve my teamwork, allowing me to make a meaningful impact alongside like-minded leaders. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: The Back To School Project
The Back to School Project is a grassroots initiative that I founded to address the barriers preventing children from underserved communities in Zambia from accessing quality education. This project focuses on providing essential school supplies like uniforms, shoes, and books to children in need, especially in areas such as Bauleni Compound, Chisamba Community, and George Compound.
The project started with personal visits to families to understand their specific challenges, followed by distributing supplies to 13 children (6 boys and 7 girls). Additionally, for children unable to enroll in formal schools, I collaborated with a fellow law student to start informal “under-the-tree” classes, teaching foundational subjects like reading and mathematics.
A key component of the project is empowering girls by addressing menstrual hygiene challenges, thereby reducing absenteeism through the provision of sanitary towels.
Despite financial constraints and safety challenges, the project has successfully helped children return to school and inspired community involvement. It aligns with multiple Sustainable Development Goals, including Quality Education, Gender Equality, and Reduced Inequalities.
Moving forward, I plan to expand its reach by partnering with organizations and schools, aiming to create a sustainable initiative that ensures no child is left behind.
