" I am very honored and excited to be selected as a Millennium Fellow for the Class of
2024. This fellowship is an opportunity for me to connect with passionate and
dedicated leaders from around the globe who are committed to bringing positive
changes in their communities. My journey in food and nutrition is fueled by a deep
wish to improving health outcomes and fostering well-being, especially in underserved
communities. Being part of the Millennium Fellowship allows me to collaborate with
others who share this common vision with me, and together, we can combine our
efforts to create sustainable solutions. The Millennium Fellowship aligns perfectly with
my goals, as it focuses on advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development
Goals (SDGs). Through this fellowship, I am eager to contribute to the global agenda
by enhancing food security, promoting healthy diets, and advocating for nutrition
education. The fellowship's emphasis on leadership development, social impact, and
community engagement will not only help me grow as a leader but also empower me to drive real change in the world. I am excited to embark on this journey, knowing that
the work we do together will leave a lasting impact in different communities. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Community Waste Management Initiative in Zomba
Community Waste Management Initiative at the University of Malawi and some areas in Zomba community:
As part of our cohort's community development project, we embarked on the Community Waste Management Initiative, aimed at addressing the pressing issues of broken sewage pipes and plastic disposal in our community, specifically within the University of Malawi and surrounding areas in Zomba. So, our objective was to create a cleaner, healthier, and sustainable environment by mitigating the dangers and risks associated with these problems. The community faced significant challenges due to broken sewage pipes contaminating water sources, posing health risks to residents, and improper plastic disposal choking drainage systems, harming wildlife, and polluting the environment.
About the Millennium Fellow
Annie Lindiwe Funsani is a student at the University of Malawi formerly known as
Chancellor College. Annie is currently in her final year of university and she's pursuing
a bachelor's degree in food and nutrition. Annie is a very bright student and she's
always willing to learn, listen , volunteer and looking for opportunities where she can
bring change into her community. Studying food and nutrition has helped Annie to
understand better about the nutrient requirements of different individuals, it has
helped her learn more about malnutrition (which is a burden in her country Malawi)
and also know the causes of this malnutrition. Annie joined an organization known as
Nutrition champions in which she is the programs manager. This organization aims to
bring awareness to people on the impact that malnutrition has on a nation, the causes
of this malnutrition and ways of preventing malnutrition. Annie is currently
volunteering at Queen Elizabeth Central hospital in the office of the dietician and the
nutrition rehabilitation unit where she's learning more on individual nutrient needs and
how best to help those who are malnourished . Annie is a very dedicated and selfless
lady whose goal is to see every child grow healthily.
