UNITED NATIONS ACADEMIC IMPACT AND MCN PROUDLY PRESENT ATUPELE CHIWAYA, A MILLENNIUM FELLOW FOR THE CLASS OF 2024.
University of Malawi | Lilongwe, Malawi | Advancing SDG 3, SDG 6 & UNAI 9

" The Millennium Fellowship is very prestigious.
People are more inclined to listen to somebody
who has academic or extracurricular
achievements such as this. The fellowship will
afford me the opportunity for personal and
professional growth through exposure to others
equally and more determined to drve social
justice in their respective areas. There is nothing more inspiring than seeing your fellow youth
lead. It validates dreams and pushes me to work
harder knowing that it is possible. Others have
done it.
The very nature of the questions demonstrates
how the fellowship will compel me to continuosly
question and reflect on the project. I believe the
opportunity will challenge, hone and sharpen my
skills, knowledge and attitudes on leadership,
planning and working with people to achieve
specific goals.
As an aspiring professional, these cannot be
understated. The fellowship will be foundational
for my career on environmental and social
justice. I hope to be a high level policy and law
negotiator at the international level on behalf of
my country one day. That would need a strong
background of interrogating and working on
these issues to comprehend them thoroughly
inorder to address them with efficiency and effectiveness. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Community Waste Management Initiative in Zomba
Community Waste Management Initiative at the University of Malawi and some areas in Zomba community:
As part of our cohort's community development project, we embarked on the Community Waste Management Initiative, aimed at addressing the pressing issues of broken sewage pipes and plastic disposal in our community, specifically within the University of Malawi and surrounding areas in Zomba. So, our objective was to create a cleaner, healthier, and sustainable environment by mitigating the dangers and risks associated with these problems. The community faced significant challenges due to broken sewage pipes contaminating water sources, posing health risks to residents, and improper plastic disposal choking drainage systems, harming wildlife, and polluting the environment.
