United Nations Academic Impact and MCN are proud to partner on the Millennium Fellowship. This year, 52,000+ young leaders applied to join the Class of 2024 on 6,000+ campuses across 170 nations. 280+ campuses worldwide (just 5%) were selected to host the 4,000+ Millennium Fellows.

Millennium Fellowship Project: Community Waste Management Initiative in Zomba

Community Waste Management Initiative at the University of Malawi and some areas in Zomba community:
As part of our cohort's community development project, we embarked on the Community Waste Management Initiative, aimed at addressing the pressing issues of broken sewage pipes and plastic disposal in our community, specifically within the University of Malawi and surrounding areas in Zomba.So, our objective was to create a cleaner, healthier, and sustainable environment by mitigating the dangers and risks associated with these problems.The community faced significant challenges due to broken sewage pipes contaminating water sources, posing health risks to residents, and improper plastic disposal choking drainage systems, harming wildlife, and polluting the environment.

About the Millennium Fellow

Mayamiko Malika is a 20-year-old Malawian student pursuing a degree in Public Administration at the University of Malawi. She is a passionate advocate for women's empowerment and poverty eradication, driven by a desire to bring positive change in her society. With a great passion for positive change, Mayamiko actively engages in programs that bring change in the community.As she continues her studies and community engagement Mayamiko aims to leverage her knowledge and skills to make a meaningful impact in her community and beyond.
