Millennium Fellowship Project: Community Waste Management Initiative in Zomba
Community Waste Management Initiative at the University of Malawi and some areas in Zomba community:
As part of our cohort's community development project, we embarked on the Community Waste Management Initiative, aimed at addressing the pressing issues of broken sewage pipes and plastic disposal in our community, specifically within the University of Malawi and surrounding areas in Zomba. So, our objective was to create a cleaner, healthier, and sustainable environment by mitigating the dangers and risks associated with these problems. The community faced significant challenges due to broken sewage pipes contaminating water sources, posing health risks to residents, and improper plastic disposal choking drainage systems, harming wildlife, and polluting the environment.
About the Millennium Fellow
Yankho Kawalewale is a hardworking young from a small landlocked country in
southeastern Africa Called Malawi. He is a fourth-year law student at the University of
Malawi with a passion for environmental justice. For as long as he could remember, he
always had an interest in the state of waste management systems in Malawi and how
inadequate they were. Although not having been able to successfully organisation or
implement a social impact project as of date, he aspires to change this by successfully
implementing a social impact project in the form of reconstructing the waste
management system of Zomba City in the Eastern Region of Malawi.
