" Function and Utility are the core principles that fuel my Architectural works. Being a part of the Millennium Fellowship will expose me to new, diverse philosophies that can be applied my Architecture with specific regard to community development. The leadership skills I will gain from the fellowship will get me a step closer to making an impact on informal settlements. I am excited to increase my sustainability competence aligned to the UNAI principles and SDGS by interacting with new ways of learning and different ideologies from my peers. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Sustainable Housing

The housing situation in Kenya is in a dire state. Inadequate housing has led to the proliferation of informal settlements. Efforts by various organizations and stakeholders to improve the situation have been slow, fragmented, often marred by corruption, and unaccountability, and impact very few. Buni is a decentralized platform based on blockchain technology that connects communities, organizations, donors, and the different stakeholders in the housing sector to facilitate a secure, transparent, and wholesome exchange of resources and knowledge that would empower communities to participate in the direct improvement of their environment and housing situation. The project is being undertaken over a series of phases, ultimately leading to its successful fruition.

About the Millennium Fellow

At 5 foot 5, Tabitha Nyarinda Onsare was born in Embu, a small tranquil town in Kenya, nestled in the embrace of rolling hills and verdant meadows exuding simplicity. She is a soft-spoken and creative soul currently studying Architecture at the University of Nairobi. Throughout her life, Tabitha has been aware of the social injustices that are the unfortunate norm in her country and has deeply felt the need to contribute to alleviation of the situation. She is a young mother, and empathises with other young people who are unable to access quality, safe and hygienic living conditions. Tabitha aspires to grow her leadership skills together with the Architectural knowledge she is currently gaining in school to help repair and build better communities that are equitable to all as her contribution to the United Nation's Sustainable Goals
