Millennium Fellowship Project: Equal Eye Care Initiative

In the United States, there are social determinants of health leading to socioeconomic and racial inequities in accessing proper vision care. Visual impairment disproportionately burdens racial and ethnic minorities. Beyond this, some diseases like glaucoma, is the leading cause of preventable blindness and disproportionately burdens of African descent. Cost, access, and health literacy contribute to the racial disparities in glaucoma. However, not only are Black patients more likely to be surgically undertreated, they are also at increased risk for surgical failure. This compounds the fact that African Americans have thinner corneas than those of European descent—thin corneas are a known risk factor for glaucoma. Thus, the Equal Eye Care Initiative (EECI) has a dual aim: in my immediate community of West Philadelphia, it intends to serve through screening options and simple eye tests that volunteer ophthalmologists and medical students could perform with assistance from undergrad technicians. Globally, I hope to form a network of ophthalmologists connected to hospitals across West Africa. Ophthalmology is a promising field for telehealth integration through the electronic exchange of images for diagnosis and maintenance. Teleophthalmology is even more suitable for managing chronic ocular conditions like glaucoma.
