Millennium Fellowship Project: Feeding Street Children
The "Helping Street Children" project is a comprehensive initiative designed to address the multifaceted challenges faced by street children through a holistic approach that combines immediate support, educational empowerment, and community reintegration. The project aims to provide essential services including nutrition, healthcare, safe shelter, and psychological support for children aged 5-18, with a particular focus on unaccompanied minors and those from extreme poverty backgrounds. By implementing strategic outreach programs, protection services, and skill development workshops, the project seeks to build trust, offer educational opportunities, and create pathways for long-term improvement in these children's lives. Key intervention strategies include mobile support teams, legal advocacy, trauma-informed care, life skills training, and collaborative partnerships with local government agencies, NGOs, and community leaders. The ultimate goals are to reduce vulnerability, increase school enrollment, enhance employability, and facilitate positive community reintegration, ultimately offering street children hope, support, and tangible opportunities for a better future.
About the Millennium Fellow
Darius BENIMANA is a medical student at the university of Rwanda and also an executive director of Medcancer initiative Rwanda. Darius is an active member of Medical students’ association of Rwanda (MEDSAR), where he serves as a Capacity building assistant development in the standing committee On research exchange and he is also a vice mentorship coordinator the FIRAT-SRG a student led organization at the university of Rwanda that increases undergraduate students being involved in research activities, Darius is also an IFMSA trainer on research and professional exchange. Darius BENIMANA is a young emerging evaluator and junior researcher with several research projects on cancer and palliative care, Students involvement in Health system strengthening, Public health, cancer care, Non-Communicable Diseases and others. Darius BENIMANA is an enthusiastic healthcare advocate, who has been involved in different radio cancer awareness talks and community outreaches, He wrote a blog post entitled on “cancer care among health care students, a key towards building sustainable cancer care system in Rwanda.” Darius founded Medcancer initiative Rwanda, a young led-organization that raises awareness cancer among population of Rwanda by capacitating young individuals with cancer skills, train them to become a successful cancer advocates.
