Millennium Fellowship Project: Cancer Agaahi

When it comes to diseases, people often say prevention is better than cure. But our question is, how can we expect people to prevent something they remain unaware of? Agaahi is an Urdu word that means ‘awareness’. Our project aims to advance SDG 3 by spreading information through workshops and dialogues regarding different types of cancers, their early detection, and treatments to the rural and urban population of Sindh. Based on the most recent cancer statistics, the highest mortality in Pakistan is due to breast and oral cavity cancer. Breast cancer is a potentially curable disease if its signs and symptoms are detected early on. However, due to the social taboo associated with discussing breast-related issues, women often find out about the devastating disease when it’s too late. In contrast to breast cancer, oral cancer is highly preventable. The reason behind its high occurrence is the use of tobacco products. Therefore, the measurable goals of Project Cancer Agaahi are: 1) To organize awareness workshops in collaboration with hospitals/NGOs. 2) To promote cancer awareness using social media. 3) To collect donations through online donation boxes. The proceeds from the donations will go to cancer hospitals and to fund the physical workshops.
