" I am excited to be a Millennium Fellow because it provides a unique platform to amplify my efforts in empowering young girls and addressing systemic challenges in marginalized communities. Growing up in a village where opportunities were scarce, I am driven to create sustainable solutions that align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This fellowship is an opportunity to collaborate with like-minded changemakers, learn, and expand my impact from the local level to the global stage. "

About the Millennium Fellow
Umrah Chimera was born and raised in a marginalized village in Coastal Kenya, where she experienced the realities of poverty and the limited opportunities available to girls. Growing up in a close-knit family, her parents instilled in her the values of resilience and hard work, while her grandmother’s unwavering support inspired her to pursue her dreams despite the challenges. These early experiences shaped her passion for societal well-being and empowering young girls, particularly those in underserved communities.
Currently a student at the United States International University - Africa, pursing Bachelor of Arts in International Relations with a concentration in Development Studies. Umrah is dedicated to creating meaningful change through leadership and community engagement. As Vice President of the USIU Equity Leaders Chapter, she spearheads impactful initiatives such as teaching teenage girls to make reusable sanitary towels, fostering sustainability, dignity, and self-reliance. She is also a staunch advocate for community development and poverty alleviation, aligning her efforts with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 5 (Gender Equality).
With a vision that extends from her village to the global stage, Umrah is committed to championing the rights and opportunities of women and girls, striving to build a more equitable and sustainable future for all.
