Millennium Fellowship Project: Digging Deeper
Mining is integral to Australia's economy, contributing significantly to national GDP and employment. However, it often comes with environmental degradation, habitat destruction, and social displacement. Recognising this paradox, our cohort - comprising students from environmental science, engineering, and social sciences - decided to delve into research that could reconcile economic benefits with ecological responsibility. Our project aims to develop sustainable mining practices that minimise environmental impact while promoting social equity. We focus on three main objectives:
1. Innovative Technologies: Investigate cutting-edge technologies like bioleaching and renewable energy integration to reduce the carbon footprint of mining operations.
2. Community Engagement: Work closely with local communities, especially Indigenous groups, to ensure that mining activities respect cultural heritage and contribute to social well-being.
3. Policy Advocacy: Collaboration with policymakers to promote regulations that enforce sustainable practices across the industry.
