" With my experience in leadership and problem solving, the Millennium Fellowship is the perfect programme for me to meet like minded young individuals who are dedicated to creating something great that benefits the mass. I am truly honoured to be part of a programme that enables to me to use my position of privilege to help the community that supported me, but never had the chance to receive the opportunities I did. Through this programme, I will endeavour to create equal opportunities for everyone, no matter their background. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Digging Deeper

Mining is integral to Australia's economy, contributing significantly to national GDP and employment. However, it often comes with environmental degradation, habitat destruction, and social displacement. Recognising this paradox, our cohort - comprising students from environmental science, engineering, and social sciences - decided to delve into research that could reconcile economic benefits with ecological responsibility. Our project aims to develop sustainable mining practices that minimise environmental impact while promoting social equity. We focus on three main objectives:
1. Innovative Technologies: Investigate cutting-edge technologies like bioleaching and renewable energy integration to reduce the carbon footprint of mining operations.
2. Community Engagement: Work closely with local communities, especially Indigenous groups, to ensure that mining activities respect cultural heritage and contribute to social well-being.
3. Policy Advocacy: Collaboration with policymakers to promote regulations that enforce sustainable practices across the industry.

About the Millennium Fellow

Joseph Chen is an aspiring young individual with a determined goal in the law industry. He is currently studying pre-law at the University of Western Australia and planning to pursue the Juris Doctor degree after he graduates. With such knowledge, he plans to use it to help those that are less fortunate. Joseph grew up in China, and later moved to Australia, Perth at the age of eleven. As a first generation immigrant, Joseph experienced various aspects of social injustices, unfair policies and cultural difficulties. From a family that worked from the bottom up, Joseph understands that all it needs for anyone to succeed is an opportunity.
