" The abundance of “us” vs “them” discourse is causing us to lose sight of what matters - the fact that each of us is human, with multitudes of ideas threaded in our songs, images, tall tales, and shared glances. I want to believe that we can, in time, realize a universe in which all identities are peacefully embraced and celebrated. It's about time we make the effort to truly understand others’ experiences and provide necessary support to those who need it. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Culture and Behavioral Economics
I am passionate about using storytelling to draw attention to pressing issues, educate about complex world events, and inspire change. If we can use the media to set prejudices aside and instead celebrate our differences, perhaps people will be more inclined to help out, volunteer, or donate, allowing us to move toward more optimal resource allocation. As a Director of Cultural Affairs on the Junior Class Council at Yale throughout fall 2024, I helped co-organize events on campus, including a Multicultural Trivia Night where we partnered with local restaurants around the New Haven community and encouraged more open intercultural dialogue on campus.
Separately, over the past few months, I have garnered a list of 20 books that will be useful for outlining the evidence that I will use throughout my essay. After consulting a vast number of books, the finalized list that I have on the next page are the ones that I have deemed the most directly helpful to my research topic. In the future, I aim to communicate my findings in a 15-20 page paper using an easy-to-understand structure and clear explanations on jargon, so that the maximum number of people can begin reading as they’d like and understand the role that culture can play in economics. This is of pertinent importance to the mission of the United Nations, which is to maintain international peace.
About the Millennium Fellow
Yule Zhang (nickname Arrow) is a junior at Yale University studying Comparative Literature and Economics. She is interested in how multicultural storytelling can influence people’s perceptions of other cultures both within a country and internationally, as well as how those narratives can impact international relations. On campus, Arrow is the Head Copy Editor for Yale’s Accent Multilingual Magazine and will serve as an undergraduate student coordinator for the Asian American Cultural Center in the coming academic year. She also attended Middlebury’s Japanese Language School in summer 2024, where she achieved advanced fluency and conducted a small research project using primary sources in Japanese. Arrow is excited to continue her work by expanding upon welcoming environments that celebrate all identities and by fostering a greater sense of belonging within communities.
