Millennium Fellowship Project: Unihigh: Bridging The Gap for African Students

Unihigh is a project that aims to help African high school students, especially national exam takers, gain essential academic and life skills before graduation. Poor performance by national exam takers is a major problem seen across many countries, such as Ethiopia. This project focuses on helping students discover their interests and gain the essential knowledge needed to pass the national exam. It aims to do this by connecting national exam takers and university students. The university students will take a rigorous exam and their skills will be vetted to help the students. Once qualified, they will be assigned to local high schools near them, to help and tutor students on subjects they will be taking during the national exam and other soft skills such as communication, coding, and teamwork. The university students will then serve as mentors and teach in their communities. This allows university students to also gain experience, build leadership skills, and can even lead to financial support towards their tuition. This will support both high school students and build a strong learning community that fosters giving back.

About the Millennium Fellow

My name is Aryam Ezra Mersha, and I am entering my senior year in college, studying Electrical and Computer Engineering. I aim to leverage the opportunities and challenges I encounter to help those around me. I believe in taking action and leading my life through the choices I make. My aspiration is to positively impact the world and reflect that through my decisions. I want to focus on quality education (SDG 4) and building sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11), aligning my efforts with these important goals. I am particularly passionate about helping women participate in the math, science, and technology fields through the opportunities I've been given.
