" I am driven by a desire to create a meaningful impact in my community which is caused by my deep curiosity. I am excited to be a Millennium Fellowbecause it helps me bridge my curiosity to concrete change in ways that go with the UNAI principles and the SDGs. Through this fellowship, I hope to strengthen my leadership, collaboration and problem solving skills, making my work impactful. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Sustain H2O
Human Waste along with chemical waste is frequently thrown into rivers and other water bodies in my country, putting the lives of humans and living things at risk by making the water unfit for consumption. Sustain H2O is a youth-led initiative dedicated to restoring the relationship between Ethiopian communities and their water bodies. Recognizing that many of the nation’s rivers and lakes are polluted by waste and neglect, the project seeks to promote environmental responsibility through awareness, education, and community engagement.
About the Millennium Fellow
Bamlak Fekadu is a passionate youth that currently attends one of the most prestigious school in Ethiopia, Addis Ababa University. From an early age, she had a deeply reflective, passionate and questioning mind which always looks beneath the surface of life. She values truth over convenience and is unafraid to challenge widely accepted narratives. Her curiosity ranges from science to philosophy to social issues and personal growth. In her high school years, she took on roles that gave her the responsibility for organizing and guiding her peers whether in academic contexts, school events, or community activities. She wasn’t just someone who stood on the sidelines and observed, but rather the one people could count on to get things going. At university, she’s built a foundation by stepping into spaces that challenged her to lead diverse groups, communicate ideas clearly, and inspire action. She hopes to pursue a professional path that allows her to champion these causes and play an active role in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
