" I am excited to be a Millennium Fellow because it gives me the opportunity to live out my calling: serving humanity with compassion, offering hope, and glorifying God through medicine and community impact. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Save The Lungs in The Husk

Save the Lungs in the Husk is a group project led by Millennium Fellow Ebenyi Hyacinth Chibuike, which I have chosen to collaborate on. The project aims to address the respiratory health hazards that vulnerable women are exposed to at the Abakaliki ricemill while scavenging for grains in the husk from the milling factories.
The measurable goals I hope to accomplish between August and December 2025 are:
1. Educate the women on the risks of exposure and the protective measures they can take to safeguard their airways.
2. Draw support from government agencies and organizations to empower them through the provision of PPEs.
3. Engage with ricemill authorities on relevant policy adjustments that can be made to ensure sustainable occupational health for these women

About the Millennium Fellow

Jane Akpa is a vibrant and globally oriented medical student at Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Abakaliki, Nigeria. Born and raised in Nigeria, she is passionate about giving back to her community through medicine, a calling she believes goes beyond the physical to the spiritual. For Jane, medicine is a ministry of caring for the whole person: spirit, soul, and body, reflecting her Christian faith and love for Christ. Though still finding her feet as a young aspiring professional, she believes in taking every opportunity as a platform to serve humanity and glorify God.
