Millennium Fellowship Project: Health Education, Healthier Community

My passion for health education began when I was working as a junior nurse at Coptic Hospital. We had a project with AstraZeneca that was held in Kibera to help school-going children learn about health, and also we were doing health checkups like blood pressure and random blood sugar for the community members. I encountered many gaps where school-going children were not aware of simple things like hand washing, the importance of deworming, and how to prevent infections that arise from poor hygiene. Girls mostly had issues with urinary tract infections, and others did not like how they looked due to skin issues. The greatest challenge I observed among community members was that many had diabetes mellitus and high blood pressure without knowing. Some had issues with adherence. Since then, I have been educating patients and members of my church and communities depending on their unique issues. Due to the above problem, I have been looking for an opportunity where I can practice and engage communities on the importance of health education. For example, in my community, I have encountered many women who are pregnant, but they are not aware if they need to visit the hospital for prenatal care.
