" Empathy, resilience, and a deep understanding of the complexities of mental health drive my work. As a passionate advocate for mental wellness, I believe that being part of the Millennium Fellowship will equip me with the skills and knowledge to collaboratively address the intricacies and dynamics of mental health issues. The skills I gain from the Millennium Fellowship will enable me to develop innovative solutions, foster a supportive community, and promote a culture of understanding and inclusivity. I am excited to contribute to the UNAI principles and SDGs, particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), and to work towards creating a more compassionate and mentally healthy society. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Mindmend - Mental Health and Eco-anxiety
As part of my contribution toward achieving SDG 3, I designed and executed a series of mental-health–centered initiatives aimed at promoting emotional well-being, reducing stigma, and enhancing awareness among students. My work included conducting surveys to identify key stressors and mental-health challenges faced by young people. Based on the feedback, I helped organize awareness campaigns, managed interactive stalls, and set up reclining and relaxation activities to provide immediate stress relief. I also created mindfulness corners and mental-relaxation spaces where students could disconnect, unwind, and access guided techniques for stress management. To ensure deeper impact, we arranged on-spot counseling and facilitated open conversations on mental health. As part of community outreach, I conducted a seminar at IMCG to destigmatize mental health issues and encourage help-seeking behavior. Additionally, we hosted a dedicated session with Psychologist Qazi Abdullah, where participants explored the connection between mental health, daily functioning, and personal aspirations. Through these initiatives, the project contributed to fostering a supportive environment, strengthening mental-health literacy, and empowering students to prioritize their emotional well-being.
In Pakistan, the need to prioritize mental health is intensified by the persistent climate of insecurity that shapes daily life for many people. The long history of terrorism, frequent roadside threats, and the unpredictability of violent incidents create a constant sense of fear and hyper-vigilance. This ongoing exposure to danger can lead to chronic stress, trauma, and heightened anxiety across communities-especially among students and young adults who navigate these situations regularly.
Additionally, rising cases of domestic violence, robbery, and road snatching contribute to an environment where individuals often feel unsafe even within their own neighborhoods or homes. These experiences erode emotional stability, diminish resilience, and leave lasting psychological effects that frequently go unaddressed due to stigma or lack of support systems. In such a context, promoting mental health awareness, providing coping tools, and building safe spaces becomes not just beneficial but essential. Tackling these issues directly helps individuals process trauma, regain a sense
