Millennium Fellowship Project: AquaRevive
Aquarevive is project of four Millennium Fellows from Bangladesh Maritime University. The subtitle was Reviving Dhaka's waterways through pollution awareness and community action. Dhaka is the capital city of Bangladesh. Also it is the most densely populated city of our country. Whereas our identity is deeply tied to its rich network of rivers, lakes, ponds, canals etc. Millions of lives are dependent on these waterways. But nowadays Dhaka is getting heavily impacted by water pollution. Various sources like household waste, industrial waste and other anthropogenic activities are increasing water pollution day by day. These water pollution has severely degraded the water quality and aquatic lives. There is also lack of human awareness. Through AquaRevive, we have visited several places where we successfully created an impressive awareness among the local people living near these waterways. Our main target was to visit those places, observe the condition and try to understand them about the harmful consequences of it. We have distributed leaflets, posters and thematic arts among them which helped them to understand the harmful effects - not only on aquatic ecosystem but also on human health. We encouraged them to bring changes their habits and being adaptive with the sustainable practices. We have visited Beribadh, Jhilpar, Turag river, Balu river, Buriganga, Sadarghat, Banani lake , Gulshan lake and Hatirjheel, Dhaka. Where we directly communicated with the local people. We conducted awareness events, engaging them through campaigns, knowledge sharing etc. Through this project we successfully connected approximately 230+ individuals , got a positive feedback, efforts and interest. Our project is directly aligned with SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation) and also connects SDG 11, 12 and 14.
The project was successfully completed and marked a meaningful step towards the next. We hope to get a cleaner water, cleaner Dhaka and healthier life!
